OpenAI’s Shopify rollout moves ChatGPT Ads toward programmable commerce

Shopify rollout
OpenAI’s ChatGPT Ads app for Shopify expanded internationally on September 23 in markets where ChatGPT Ads is available.
Labeled agents
Sponsored Agents are separate, labeled brand conversations that begin after a user engages with an ad.
Prompt campaigns
Advertisers can create, update and analyze ChatGPT Ads campaigns through typed prompts and connected commerce or CRM systems.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT Ads app for Shopify launched internationally on September 23 in markets where ChatGPT Ads is available. The app extends a commerce workflow that lets merchants connect catalogs, add measurement and create product ads from Shopify instead of building feeds manually.25
The mechanics point to a broader shift in chat interfaces. Sponsored agents and commerce placements are turning conversational systems into programmable buying surfaces, while forcing platforms to define where an independent assistant response ends and a paid brand interaction begins.
OpenAI’s ad format places sponsored units outside the normal ChatGPT answer, with placements shown below responses rather than inside the assistant’s reply, according to Search Engine Journal and BrandCited summaries of the rollout.13 Sponsored Agents, described as a limited U.S. alpha with selected advertisers, add another boundary: after clicking an ad, a user can open a separate, clearly labeled conversation with a business-sponsored agent rather than continuing the original ChatGPT thread.4
For Shopify merchants, the app is designed to reduce the setup work usually required to run product ads. Clear Click reported that UK merchants could install the app from September 23, sync their catalog and launch ads inside Shopify admin without leaving the commerce system.2 Novoads described the connection flow as linking a ChatGPT Ads account, connecting or creating an OpenAI Pixel for Shopify, syncing product inventory into a product feed and using that feed to create ads.5
That makes the product feed a central interface between the store and the chat ad surface. The synced data can include product inventory, catalog information, store updates and commerce events flowing through the connected pixel, according to Novoads.5 In a catalog ad, product imagery and data become the raw material for the paid unit, rather than assets uploaded through a separate manual workflow.
The measurement layer is also tied into OpenAI’s advertising stack. GEO Tracker AI reported that OpenAI supports Pixel and Conversions API measurement for ChatGPT Ads, while noting that conversion reporting depends on event configuration, attribution windows and available signals.6 For product teams, that puts the Shopify app in the same class as other commerce ad connectors: it is not only a publishing tool, but also a data pipe for optimization and reporting.
OpenAI’s newer ad tools also move campaign operations into natural-language workflows. JAS AI Automation reported that advertisers can create, update and analyze ChatGPT campaigns from typed prompts, with an Ads Manager plugin able to turn a website or brief into a campaign and suggest next steps.7
The same report said OpenAI added AI creative tools for suggested copy and imagery, opt-in text customization and translation, alongside HubSpot as the first CRM partner and Shopify as the first e-commerce partner.7 Clear Click’s account of the launch similarly listed HubSpot, Shopify, natural-language campaign creation and Sponsored Agents as the main product pieces OpenAI announced around the rollout.2
Together, those pieces compress several layers of the ad workflow. A merchant or marketer can start with a catalog, landing page or written brief; use prompts to create and analyze campaigns; and route sales or lead activity through commerce and CRM systems. The campaign interface becomes less like a form-based dashboard and more like an instruction layer over connected business systems.
Sponsored Agents are the clearest example of the new boundary problem. GEO Tracker AI described them as a paid format in which a person can open a labeled conversation with an AI representative of an advertiser after engaging with an ad.4 The source emphasized that the branded conversation is separate from the user’s original ChatGPT conversation and distinct from ChatGPT’s independent answers.4
JAS AI Automation described the same mechanism: a user can choose to chat with a business-sponsored agent after clicking an ad, ask follow-up questions and then visit the business website when ready.7 Search Engine Journal reported that OpenAI is experimenting with Sponsored Agents among a limited group of U.S. advertisers and that those chats start as new conversations separate from the original thread.1
For users, the distinction is practical. A normal ChatGPT answer may compare options, summarize information or recommend next steps. A Sponsored Agent is a brand-sponsored sales or support conversation tied to an advertiser’s offer. The interface can feel conversational in both cases, but the source, incentive and product boundary are different.
The rollout puts more weight on labeling and placement. BrandCited reported that sponsored placements sit below the organic ChatGPT response and do not change what ChatGPT says in the answer body.3 Search Engine Journal also said OpenAI places ads below ChatGPT responses, adding a paid layer to retail conversations rather than rewriting the assistant’s normal response.1
That separation is central to user intent. If a person asks ChatGPT for advice, they may expect the answer to be generated independently. If they click a labeled paid placement and enter a Sponsored Agent conversation, the context changes: the user is interacting with a business representative. Clear labeling, persistent context cues and clear exit paths are not cosmetic interface details; they define whether the user understands the interaction.
Early data suggests these surfaces are already appearing in a meaningful share of commercial chats. Search Engine Journal cited Comscore data showing sponsored ads in 47% of tracked U.S. desktop ChatGPT conversations about video games and consoles in June, up from 3% in March.1 The same report said ad presence increased across other retail categories, while noting limits in the published methodology.1
The Shopify and HubSpot integrations show how ChatGPT Ads can move beyond a simple sponsored link. Shopify connects product data, inventory and commerce events; HubSpot connects ads, performance tracking and lead follow-up in a CRM environment.27 Together, those integrations make ChatGPT a surface where discovery, qualification, measurement and follow-up can be stitched into business systems.
That does not mean every part of the system is generally available. Sponsored Agents remain a limited U.S. alpha, according to GEO Tracker AI, and standard Ads Manager access does not automatically unlock the agent format.4 The Shopify app, by contrast, expanded internationally on September 23 in supported ChatGPT Ads markets, with the UK specifically cited as live by Clear Click.2
The result is a two-track product picture. Shopify merchants in supported markets can begin testing catalog-based ChatGPT Ads through the app, while Sponsored Agents remain a more restricted test of branded conversational commerce. Both point in the same direction: paid chat interfaces are becoming programmable, integrated and transactional, but their usefulness will depend on how clearly platforms preserve the line between assistance and advertising.

F5 has released fixes for CVE-2026-94127, a critical BIG-IP APM flaw exploited in remote code execution attacks against deployments configured as OAuth Authorization Servers. Operators should verify whether access-policy and OAuth-profile virtual servers are exposed, apply the correct hotfix or F5 iRule mitigation, and review systems for correlated indicators of compromise.

Microsoft launched a public preview of Integrated Security Operations Center in Microsoft Defender on September 23, bringing SIEM, XDR, automation, case management and agent workflows into one Defender experience. For enterprise SOCs, the immediate question is not whether agents can be added, but whether teams can prove automated workflows are governed, observable and safe enough to trust.

Qualcomm is positioning Snapdragon X2 PCs as a platform for agentic AI that can run locally, span phones and laptops, and expand beyond Windows into Googlebook and Linux systems. The engineering case is credible but incomplete: NPUs, Ubuntu support and device continuity reduce friction, while model limits, software integration and cloud handoffs remain decisive.

At Connect 2026, Meta split its glasses strategy across audio-only AI, camera-equipped capture glasses, display glasses and 100-gram VR glasses. The result is a clearer product ladder, but also a sharper set of tradeoffs around cameras, displays, immersion and privacy.
